I'm afraid my child may want to return to the birth mother when he or she is older. Should I be concerned?
The relationship your child builds with his or her birth mother will be different that the one built with your family. Children in open adoption cases form emotional bonds with adoptive parents in the same way as children raised in their biological home. While your child will be offered the opportunity to know and interact with his or her birth mother, the emotional bonds will develop differently than those formed in a home setting. Children in open adoption cases are less likely to seek habitation with a biological parent because they won't have an idealized view of what life with their birth parent would be like. They can receive the answers and emotional support they need from a birth mother while also receiving all the love, support and benefits of a home environment that you can offer them.
